Wadsworth is giving a religious exemption for 7 Mindsets SEL curriculum
Date: Mon, Oct 10, 2022 10:08 amSubject: Fw: Opt-Out Forms 2022-2023
I just wanted to forward to you the last correspondence I had with the Superintendent of Wadsworth City Schools. Based on the Wadsworth City Schools' Board Policy, I was able to use a religious exemption to exclude my daughter from the school's 7 Mindsets SEL program. Attached are the documents that I sent with my last email to the Superintendent. I have also attached a screenshot of the school board's policy that I referenced. I hope this helps you and other families with shared concerns. Sincerely,
From: Hill (Superintendent), Andrew <ahill@wadsworthschools.org>Sent: Friday, October 7, 2022 6:10 PM
Cc: Cobb, Brandon <bcobb@wadsworthschools.org>Subject: Re: Opt-Out Forms 2022-2023 Good evening, Sorry for my delay in response, as I promised a response by early this week not the end of it. After reviewing your response, your attachment and our Board policy 2240, we will honor your request for exclusion from the 7 Mindsets program for the reason you have stated in accordance with said policy. If you have any questions, please let me know. Andy Hill_________________________Andrew J. Hill, Ed.D.SuperintendentWadsworth City School District330-335-1301 (phone)524 Broad St. Wadsworth, OH 44281

I am aware that board policy allows me to review content for my student, and I as I stated before, I would love to do so!Please let me know when I can review the content, as a date and time was not addressed in response to my previous email from Principal Cobb since he stated that you would be contacting me. I am also aware of Ohio Revised Code Section 3313.60, A; i: " (i) Beginning with the first day of the next school year that begins at least two years after March 24, 2021, in grades six through twelve, at least one hour or one standard class period per school year of evidence-based social inclusion instruction, except that upon written request of the student's parent or guardian, a student shall be excused from taking instruction in social inclusion."
At least one hour or one standard class period is the reference with EXCEPTION that upon written request (Opt-Out forms submitted 8/18/22, ) of the student's parent or guardian, the student shall be excused from taking the instruction. It does not state that a parent may request a student to be excused from mere lessons, it very clearly states that a student can be excused from the class "Social inclusion instruction". Please review the attached Opt-Out forms and apply them to my student's school record with my clear objection to the class, notated in the 15-harmful elements of SEL attachment, and SEL issues attachment. This class is also a clear invasion upon student and family privacy, (see https://studentprivacy.ed.gov/faq/what-protection-pupil-rights-amendment-ppra ).
Please review the information given and submit your acknowledgement of my Opt-Out forms. Please provide a date/time that I can review content for my student, and please respect my rights as a parent to excuse my student from the class of social inclusion instruction. Thank you again for your time, Sir, I know you are a busy man. Have a good weekend, Sir!

I have not yet received anything from the Superintendent since you stated on 9/5/22 that he would contact me.My original request was submitted on the first day of school (8/18/22), and we are now completing the 4 th week of school. I have sent you documentation for some of my reasoning for the Opt-Out forms, but for more clarification in addition to my original forms, please see attached regarding Student Privacy. I must ask that during the time the school is taking to review my request and the information sent, that my student is exempted from any SEL, DEI teachings, surveys, questionnaires, and like kind notated in the Opt-Out forms; a delayed response on part of the school is not an acceptance of any such materials for my student. Thank you for your time and attention to this matter. Have a great weekend, Sir! In response, I would like to notate that the School Board's decision to include SEL into Wadsworth City Schools was made back in 2020, (you may correct me if I am wrong on that date), but at that time, I was not a citizen of Wadsworth, so I was not present for any board meetings to share any questions or concerns with their proposals or decisions concerning Wadsworth City School curriculum. I live in the City of Wadsworth now, so providing you with my student's Opt-Out forms seemed to be the most beneficial and reasonable option. I would not be opposed to reviewing any and all curricula that my child would be exposed to; however, I do have specific concerns in regard to the SEL program as a whole, and do not believe that picking and choosing parts of it will suffice. I would simply like my student to be completely excluded from any Social Emotional Learning teaching. Please see the attached Opt-Out form notating exclusion and parental non-consent for "7 Mindsets" on Page 1, Section 1, N. In respect to any time that SEL is being taught, I would instead suggest that my student receive more instruction in Technology to practice typing or learning to navigate through Microsoft Office programs, or more time in Mathematics, Art, Band, or PE. Reasoning for this request can be found in the above attachments, but may not be limited to them. See attachment(s) "15 harmful elements in SEL" and "SEL Issues". Again, thank you for your time. It has been board approved as our curriculum to address social and emotional learning. Board policy allows for review of the materials by families (if requested). Would you like to review the materials and we could discuss which parts you'd like for us to exclude XXXXXXX from participation? If you would like to discuss further then please let me know and I could give you a call. Thank you and have a great day.

SEL ISSUES:
Social Emotional Learning – Issues… 1. Substantive content of SEL programs and resources intrudes on personal and family privacy, making children vulnerable to psychological manipulation. 2. Teachers conduct assessments of children’s emotional and social development, a task for which they are not trained qualified, using assessment tools unsupported by underlying research. 3. SEL assessments are included in children’s permanent school records, with uncertain privacy safeguards. 4. SEL curricula, resources, and assessments may touch on private or sensitive matters, without parental notice or consent. 5. “Mission creep” diverts resources, time, and attention away from education and encourages schools to usurp parental and familial responsibility towards the emotional development of children. Here’s the crux of the issue: SEL core competencies train children in consequentialist moral reasoning. Instead of internalizing the truths proposed by their faith and their families, children steeped in SEL rely on themselves, their peers, and the progressive culture. Progressive social norms become their moral authority. Mindfullness A school board director voiced concern about the new programs in her district. SEL programs promoting “mindfulness” are derived from Buddhist religious practice is used as a panacea for stress, attention deficit disorder, or any other behavioral issue. Teachers use a variety of methods from Buddhist resources, like Yeti incorporating breathing techniques, and cognitive behavioral therapies, compelling every student to participate. By turning these pseudo psychological sessions into an experience shared by the entire class is an invasion of student privacy. Teachers risk bringing issues to the surface which they cannot adequately address, because they are not trained in mental health. The controversy is broad. Educators and their “experts” applaud Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) as the transformational tool propelling students to greater academic achievement and “personal fulfillment.” A Pioneer Institute study, Social-Emotional Learning: K-12 Education as New-Age Nanny State, by Jane Robbins and Dr. Karen Effrem, M.D., makes clear, research evidence backing up these claims is thin and unpersuasive. Moreover, risks to student privacy, and health are significant. SEL focus is student attributes, mindsets, values, and behaviors, NOT academic content and knowledge. Even more troubling is the fact “goals” are ill-defined, and raise significant, unanswered questions about what attitudes should be promoted. “It’s one thing to direct your own moral, ethical, and emotional development or that of your children, but having a government vendor or unqualified public school officials implement an SEL curriculum based on coffee-table psychology is quite another.” Jane Robbins Educational software developers purport to have created products that can determine a number of sensitive personality traits through students’ interaction with digital platforms. Much of this monitoring occurs without consent of children or their parents. Some software — especially for video gaming — goes beyond assessing traits, and aims to encourage producing students who are well suited for a workforce development-centered education. “This technology, when coupled with SEL, will further spread the recent wave of amateur, unqualified psychoanalysis in schools. Given the uncertainty around diagnosis and treatment of mental or emotional problems, even by highly trained physicians, the SEL movement runs the risk of further increasing the trend toward dangerous over-diagnosis and over-medication of American schoolchildren.” Dr. Karen Effrem, M.D In 2018 federal, state, and local governments invested more than $30 billion to implement SEL in K-12 public schools. The level of expenditure is astonishing as SEL proponents admit no reliable, objective, researched-based method exists to assess a student’s personality, values, and mindsets.
