Social Emotional Learning is taught in Milford Schools.
Parent reports: on Nextdoor where Milford schools (clermont county, outside of cincinnati ) are giving kids a ‘social emotional survey’ which is run by Panorama, the company owned by the son in law of Merrick Garland. The survey is not anonymous.
Dear Parent or Guardian,
As part of our initiative to remain focused on preparing students for success in college, career, and life, Milford High School will be conducting a building-wide social-emotional learning (SEL) survey on October 14, 2021. The Ohio Department of Education recently adopted Social Emotional Learning Standards, and these standards are a response to what already is happening in schools and districts across the nation. Research shows that focusing on SEL leads to increased academic performance, and improves the emotional well-being and behavior of students. This helps students to achieve in school, and has many benefits beyond the classroom. Embedding elements of SEL into the academic environment will support the development of resilient and empathic students, while promoting school safety, and a learning environment that fosters feelings of belongingness for all students.
This online survey through Panorama Education will take approximately 10 minutes, and will ask students about their social-emotional competencies (e.g., how well they manage their behavior, how well they can regulate their emotions, how much they they can rely on others for support). Students will also be surveyed on perception of student supports and the school environment (e.g., perception of student-teacher relationships, perception of school safety, sense of belonging in the MHS community). Please encourage your child to respond with complete honesty. The survey is voluntary; students should feel free to skip any question, or they can choose not to complete the survey.
If you do not want your child to complete the survey, please contact the district’s mental health coordinator, Will Cates, via email at cates_w@milfordschools.org. Please make your requests by the end of the day on Thursday, October 7, 2021. You may utilize the aforementioned contact information if you would like additional information about the survey prior to its administration.
The feedback we receive from our students will provide invaluable insight into their experiences, and how we may improve and adapt to best meet their needs. You will receive a notice such as this in advance of each survey administration. We know that when students feel confident in their abilities, and in their value to the school community, they are better able to achieve their full potential; we look forward to serving our students in this manner.
