Maumee City Schools

_______________________________ Tip received 5/1/23: Date: Mon, May 1, 2023 8:09 amTo: tips@protectohiochildren.netSubject: Private School in Maumee ohio teaching SELSaint joseph maumee is teaching second steps material to 1st grade. After stating my concerns and sending factual data to the school this was the principals response. When requesting the materials I was told (after 3 weeks of being told I could have it) that they would not give it to me.
Social Emotional Learning is being taught in Maumee City Schools. When a parent presented opt-out forms the school would only allow opting out of surveys.
Dear Parent/Guardian, Maumee City School District is committed to supporting every student’s academic growth as well as their social, emotional and behavioral growth. Our ultimate goal for Maumee students is for them to be able to regulate their emotions, develop positive relationships and make responsible decisions. To assist us in developing educational supports and services for all students, a universal screener called SAEBRS (Social, Academic, Emotional, Behaviors Risk Screener) has been used in schools across the country for almost a decade. Before Maumee begins using this screener district-wide, a select group of teachers from each building will be trying out the screener this spring to determine if it meets our needs.
Your child’s teacher is part of this trial. The teacher will complete a screener based on their observations of each student. The screener includes 19 questions in the areas of social, academic and emotional behaviors. Your child may also, as appropriate, complete a set of student-focused questions in the areas of social, academic and emotional behaviors.
Data will be gathered for the district leadership team, building leadership teams and teacher teams to review in order to develop instructional next steps to support all students in specific grades, buildings and within our entire district. All student data will be kept confidential.
If you have any questions or concerns regarding the use of SAEBRS, please contact Tricia Samuel, Director of Educational Services, at 419-893-3200 or tsamuel@maumeek12.org. Thank you for your commitment to your child’s education and for helping us achieve Maumee City School’s mission of investing in every child, every day, to ensure all students find their success.
Attached to this email is an electronic copy of the letter. It does include the option for parents to opt out if you are uncomfortable with your child's participation in this type of assessment. Please return the bottom portion of the letter to your child's teacher no later than Thursday, April 14th or respond to this email if you wish to opt out of this opportunity for your child. Thank you!

Kind regards,Stacey SnyderData and Digital Learning Leader, Maumee City Schools 419-893-3200| staceysnyder@maumeek12.org 716 Askin St. Maumee, OH 43537
